Cowboy Action Shooting Match
Sunday   Mar. 14, 2010
10:00 AM

Okay, pardner...time to mosey on down to the ol' corral!
Time to dress up as a TV or movie cowboy (or cowgirl)
and just have fun with those shootin' irons.
We shoot at paper and steel targets.
We use firearms designed before 1900.
Yep, that's right.  Real, old-fashioned Cowboy guns!
Modern remakes are okay to use.
Each shooter uses two handguns, one shotgun
and a rifle or carbine chambered in a straight wall pistol cartridge.
We're in it just for the fun.
You will need about 50 rounds of ammo for the handguns and rifle
and one box of shells for the shotgun.
and don't forget eye and ear protection...
and maybe drinking water and sunscreen.

Range Work Day

It was a very nice and cool Saturday morning.   And we got a lot of stuff accomplished at the range.

We needed to move debris.  We still have a lot of debris left over from the range construciton.

We also needed to disperse a lot of grass seed.    Good grass is needed to help hold the berms together.

Here's a look at some of the action:

Gun Club President, Charlie Hiller unloads a tractor as
Club member, Bob Best directs the back up.
Why a tractor?
For the grass seed, of course.
More pictures below.

Here's Bob Best disking the 100 yard range.
We made sure that the grass seed was mixed below as well as above the ground.
With warmer weather and with some rain the seed should sprout
and help to maintain the integrity of the soil.
Bermuda grass seed was also scattered on top of the berms and bullet stops.

Half way through the disking process on the 100 yard range.
You can see the difference between the hard packed soil
and the newly loosened disked dirt.

Here's what it looked like right after the entire
100 yard range was disked.

Bermuda and rye grass seed was scattered of the
back of a pick up truck on the 100 and 200 yard ranges.

Chains were installed on the 100 and 200 yard ranges
to prevent vehicles from driving down to the target holders.
Vehicle traffic would create ruts in the newly plowed ground
making a muddy mess should it rain.

Left over construction materials were
moved away from the shooting area.

The old concrete shooting tables
were moved out of the way.
These were made about 20 years ago.

The old plywood tables and benches were removed
from the ranges prior to seeding.

Some of the old wooden shooting tables were
placed behind the storage buildings.
We no longer need these tables.
Feel free to take these away from the range for your own use.

About the Pharr Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc.

The Pharr Rifle & Pistol Club is also known as the Pharr Gun Club. We come from all walks of life and both sexes. We have organized for the purpose of enjoying and fostering the shooting sports. Putting SAFETY FIRST, we get together to enjoy the sport of competition as well. There has yet to be a case when a new shooter hasn't also become a new friend. We prefer not to be political and are definitely not militant. Our sport is spectator oriented so we can be in the public eye. For this reason please be advised that we will need your help in keeping language, dress, and demeanor respectable when at the range or at a match. The Pharr Gun Club range remains a family setting.
Club business meetings are on the first Tuesday of every month. The meetings are held at 7:30 pm at the Kiwanis Meeting Hall at the corner of Bluebonnet and Park in Pharr (location map).
